Randomiserede sammenligninger finder vægttab, der er bredt ækvivalent med kontinuerlig kaloriebegrænsning over 6-12 måneder. [1]
Ækvivalent, ikke bedre. Hvilken der virker, er et spørgsmål om personen, ikke protokollen.
Den konklusion, folk overser
På tværs af den randomiserede litteratur producerer fasteprotokoller vægttab, der er sammenligneligt med kontinuerlig energibegrænsning af samme omfang. Hvor et forsøg ligestiller kalorier, vinder fastearmen sjældent. Dette rapporteres konsekvent og kommunikeres konsekvent utilstrækkeligt, fordi "det fungerer omtrent lige så godt som at spise mindre" er en dårlig overskrift.
Det er stadig et nyttigt resultat. For nogle mennesker er en regel om hvornår man skal spise langt lettere at følge end en regel om hvor meget, og overholdelse er det, der faktisk bestemmer resultaterne over et år.

- 16:8 tidsbegrænset spisning — spis inden for 8 timer, fast i 16
- Tidlig tidsbegrænset spisning — vindue flyttet tidligere, f.eks. 8-16
- Alternativ-dags faste — skiftevis spisende og faste eller meget lavkaloriedage
- Et måltid om dagen (OMAD) — en enkelt daglig spisesession
- Forlænget faste (48 timer og derover) — flere dage, vand eller minimal indtagelse
